Pet of the week

Minnie Polson was in trouble, but when she met with private eye Hap Collins, she didn’t like his wise-cracking attitude. After they part company, she is murdered. Feeling guilty about not taking the case, Hap investigates. Minnie’s death, he discovers, was a cog in a conspiracy involving a series of hideous crimes. With authorities unable to end the carnage, the P.I. takes the law into his own hands in “Sugar on the Bones,” Joe R. Lansdale’s 13th thriller featuring Hap. Associated Press reviewer Bruce DeSilva says the characters are well drawn, the prose is tight, the pace is furious and the climax is savage.
