Part 1. Purpose

  1. This policy and associated procedure describe the authorities and processes for naming or renaming buildings and major public places.
  2. 亚洲无码 desires to have a thoughtful process in considering and making decisions on naming or renaming college and university buildings and major public places.
  3. 亚洲无码 strives to remember individuals and entities who have special significance, as well as to honor the mission and history of the colleges and universities, the state of Minnesota, and the regions of the state where 亚洲无码 operates.

Part 2. Definitions

Buildings
Any structure with a roof and walls that is permanently constructed or placed on a site and intended for human occupancy or use. This includes, but is not limited to, academic buildings, administrative offices, athletic facilities, residential halls, libraries, laboratories, and recreational facilities.

Major public places
Any campus, structure, street, landmark, or publicly promoted or utilized interior or exterior space. This includes, but is not limited to, auditoriums, atriums, theaters, intercollegiate athletics or sports venues, plazas, or other gathering places.

Part 3. Delegations and Responsibilities
The Board of Trustees (board) delegates the authority to name and rename buildings and major public places to the chancellor.

  1. A name may not be bestowed on a building or major public place owned by or on 亚洲无码 property without the written approval of the chancellor.
  2. Presidential naming recommendations must comply with the requirements in System Procedure 6.8.1 Naming Buildings and Major Public Places.
  3. Presidents may name and rename separate building parts and building components (i.e. conference rooms, classrooms, scoreboards) that are not major public places. Spaces named through this process must still comply with the System Procedure 6.8.1 Naming Buildings and Major Public Places.
Part 4. Accountability/Reporting
The chancellor or the chancellor’s designee must report any approved building or major public place name change to the Finance and Facilities committee at the next scheduled board meeting.

The chancellor or chancellor’s designee shall consult with the board chair and the Finance and Facilities committee chair on all requests by colleges and universities to name buildings and major public places prior to final approval. The chairs can recommend a full board review after consultation is concluded prior to naming approval.

06/18/25 – Full Review. This review and amendment involved a significant rewrite of the policy. The policy was renamed to Naming Buildings and Major Public Places. New definitions for Buildings and Major Public Places. The role of Presidents was clarified for naming spaces not considered Buildings or Major Public Places. The Board consultation process was strengthened and aligned to the process used in the Board policy on contract approvals.
